JUNE 2 - EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE LORD
Key Scripture:
"The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, even among the survivors whom the LORD calls." - Joel 2:30-32
"For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'" - Romans 10:13-15
Devotional:
Joel's prophecy reaches its climax with a universal invitation: "Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved." In the midst of cosmic upheaval-the sun darkened, the moon turned to blood-comes this astonishing promise of deliverance for all who turn to God.
The apostle Paul quotes this very verse in Romans 10:13, revealing that Joel's prophecy points directly to salvation through Jesus Christ. The gospel opens the door of redemption to all people-regardless of ethnicity, background, or past failures.
The word "everyone" (כֹּל, kol) leaves no room for exclusion.
This salvation isn't merely about escaping judgment; it's about experiencing the fullness of relationship with God. The Hebrew word for "saved" (מָלַט, malat) conveys the idea of escape, deliverance, and rescue. Jesus explained this comprehensive salvation in John 10:10: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
Joel's prophecy connects this salvation with "Mount Zion and in Jerusalem"-precisely where the Holy Spirit would later fall at Pentecost, launching the church's global mission. The geographical specificity of Joel's prophecy was fulfilled literally, while its spiritual implications continue to expand worldwide.
Acts 2:37-41 shows the first response to Peter's Pentecost sermon: "What shall we do?" Peter's answer-"Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit"-connects salvation directly to the Spirit's outpouring.
In our day, people still face a moment of decision. Jesus declared in John 3:3 that "no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." This spiritual rebirth comes through the Holy Spirit (John 3:5-8). The same Spirit who hovered over creation now recreates human hearts.
As we pray toward Pentecost, remember that the Spirit's outpouring has an evangelistic purpose. Jesus promised in Acts 1:8: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses." The flame of Pentecost is meant to spread, bringing light to those walking in darkness.
