How to Talk about Jesus

How to Talk About Jesus

Sharing our faith is something every believer is called to do, but let's be honest—it often feels a bit intimidating. Even though Jesus makes it clear when He says, "Go and make disciples," actually doing that can feel challenging at times. So, let’s explore why sharing Jesus is important and how we can overcome the fears that tend to hold us back.

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus says, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Notice that this isn’t just for pastors or people who feel specially gifted in evangelism—it’s a calling for everyone.

But what causes hesitation? Often, it’s fear. We might feel like we don’t know enough about the Bible, or we’re afraid of being rejected by friends or family. Maybe we worry about looking like hypocrites because our lives aren’t perfect.
Here’s the good news: we don’t have to be perfect to share about Jesus, we just need to be obedient to his call.

So, how can we get better at sharing our faith? Here are five practical steps to help:

1. Pray: Just like Jesus took time to pray, making prayer the foundation of sharing faith is essential. We can pray for opportunities, the right words to speak, and for hearts to be open to the message.

2. Love Others: Jesus teaches that the greatest commandments are to love God and love others. When we show genuine love and compassion, it naturally creates opportunities to share the gospel. This could look like inviting someone over for a meal, offering help, or just being present when someone is in need.

3. Know the Gospel Message: You don’t have to be a Bible expert, but having a clear understanding of the gospel basics really helps. The "Romans Road" is a great tool for this—a series of verses from Romans that explain salvation. Knowing these key scriptures can boost confidence when sharing the good news.

4. Tell Your Story: Everyone has a story to tell, and if you’ve encountered Jesus, your story is powerful. Like the blind man in John 9 who said, "One thing I know: I was blind, but now I see," we can share how God has worked in our lives.

5. Be Obedient: Our job is to plant seeds, not to make them grow. Jesus’ Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:5-15) shows that people will respond to the message in different ways. Success is measured by obedience, not results. We’re called to share and trust God with what happens next.

It's important to persevere, too. Galatians 6:9 encourages, "Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Even when we don’t see immediate results, we keep sowing seeds of faith, trusting that God will bring the harvest in His perfect timing.

Here are some practical steps for stepping out in faith:

1. Pray regularly for opportunities to share your faith.
2. Practice explaining the gospel using something like the Romans Road.
3. Write down your testimony and practice sharing it.
4. Look for ways to show Christ’s love through small acts of kindness.
5. Invite someone for coffee or a meal and be open to having a spiritual conversation.

Remember, the power to share the gospel effectively comes from the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 promises, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses." Lean into that power and trust God to use you as you share His love. Whether it’s across the world or right next door, we all have a part to play in God’s plan to bring people back to Him.
